Put Your Phasers On Stun...
How they'll chase the dot of light around. We've all seen or at least heard about the Fish will chase a laser dot also, and they'll effectiveness of lighted lures. It doesn't attack the source of the light. Seem to matter what kind of light source it Good thing that the source, in this is, necessarily. In certain conditions lures case, is the nose of the lure. I know it that do a better job of showing up in the intrigued the heck out of my cat when I teased her with it. (Note to folks at home: Mustad Triple Grip trebles do NOT mix with cats.) What the designers at Laserlure did was take some popular lures and incorporated their mini-laser in them. Granted, much of the line is biased toward bass fishing, but two lures in particular—the dark and murky generally do a better job of catching fish. That's one reason fluorescent colors are so popular with salmon and steelhead fishermen. But paint finishes, including glow and UV, are limited by the amount of light in the water. Laserlures takes this one step further by building lures that bring their own light—a small laser is mounted in the clear nose of the lures, kind of like something you might see on Star Trek. This laser then shoots red light that not only is visible from the front of the lure but also is reflected back into the lure itself. Intriguingly enough, the laser beam isn't emitted as a steady light but in rapid bursts. "The laser cycles rapidly," says Laserlure's national sales manager, Mike Lopez, "because the laser needs to cool down. This extends the life of the laser, saves battery power, and I think, adds some attraction because the light is like a heartbeat." Lopez also says that the quality of light emitted from a laser differs from that of an LED and is more attractive to animals. "If you've ever played with a laser point and a cat or dog," he says, "you know MD6-8 and DD7-9— are on the mark for salmon and steelhead use. The DD-20 will also have applications for chinook in big water. There are some caveats that go along with these baits. First, the battery (a Sony lithium-ion) life is 80 hours. That is use time. Since the electrical circuits are water-activated, the laser runs only when under water, so that is 80 hours of fishing use. While the system is water-activated, you can start the laser pulsing by completing the circuit. Put the lure away wet, or put it in a compartment with other lures, and the chances are that the circuit will be completed. You can also get the laser to fire by bridging the gap between the hook-attachment eyelets. I did this with a pair or wet fingers to torment my cat. Since the whole system is sealed and waterproof, the batteries can't be replaced. That doesn't mean, however, that the lure stops working; it just stops shooting at Klingons with its laser. And as with anything, there is the health warning. Don't shoot the laser at your eyes because you could damage them. Lopez notes that two finishes are selling well in steelhead country in the MD6-8: clear iridescent and clear red. No cats were harmed for this evaluation. Article written by Skeeter Jim for Bassin' Magazine. CLICK HERE to go directly to the article on the Bassin' website. There is a new lure company lighting up the fishing industry. I literally mean lighting it up! This company is Laser Lures by Bay Design. They have put a laser inside hard plastic lures that pulsates a red beam of light onto the bill or mouth of the bait. This idea was discovered back in 1996 when the CEO was playing with a laser in a fish tank and the fish went nuts over the laser circle. He tried it out in several other fish tanks with the same result. Do not try this at your local Bass Pro Shop as lasers are illegal in large fish tanks. The company was born and began incorporating the pulsating laser into hard baits. The laser causes fish not only to chase the bait but eat it! Fish get very aggressive when one of these lures gets in its area. Laser Lure has expanded the strike zone 300%. The water clarity does not matter as the fish can still locate and hammer the bait. The laser works off of a lithium ion battery that has a life span (wet time) of 80 hours inside a water tight body. There is a circuit board that controls the computer to stop over heating and helps extend the life of the battery. The lures are water-activated and shuts off when dried. For those of you who might think these lures are gimmicks, you are wrong! The lures look, feel and cast like the high dollar Japanese lures hanging on the shelves of our favorite tackle stores. All of the lures are hand painted, have detailed scaling on the sides of the bait, have 3-D eyes and have premium red Mustad hooks. The great thing about these awesome looking lures is that when the battery finally goes dead, you still have a great looking lure that will still catch fish. I have shown these lures to several of my fishing buddies and they all have said the same thing, "this bait doesn't look anything like I thought it would". A buddy of mine was at my home one evening and wanted to see the lures. It was dark outside, so I put one of the Deep Diver Lures in a small bowl of water and the entire bill of the bait was pulsating red. Amazing! Just imagine what it looks like under a body of water. Laser Lures currently has 5 models of hard baits on the market. They have a top water popper, a super shallow crank bait that dives from 0-12 inches, a slow rising jerk bait that goes to 4 feet, a small square-bill crank bat that dives to 6 feet and a deep diving crank bait that dives to 14 feet. Additionally, each model is available in 8 colors. Several new lure styles will be available on the market in the near future. I have fished with all five of the Laser Lure baits and have had great success. The baits look amazing out of the package but you need to see them in the water. The baits are weighted right, cast a long distance and are ready to fish right out of the package. The hooks on all of the lures are the right size, unlike small hooks we see on some of the other popular brand baits. I have fished with these baits for some time now and they have become my "go to baits". Recently, I fished a tournament and the two largest fish weighed were caught on the deep diving crank bait. I have become extremely confident fishing with these lures. You will have a huge fishing advantage with these lures, as the fish have not seen anything like this before. One thing I have begun to do with the deep diving lure is actually weight the bait to suspend it. I have almost had the rod jerked out of my hand when I suspended the bait in a brush pile, let the bait sit and flash red. Yes, I owned that fish! Be the first in your area to get your hands on the Laser Lures by Bay Design. If your local tackle retailer does not have them on their shelves, ask for them but remember, you can go to laserlure.com and order online. Until next time, be safe out on the water. |
IN THE OUTDOORS: One good catch can turn sob story to fish tale Aug. 23, 2007 C. DOUGLAS NIELSEN Excerpt - "The pike I sought had eluded me, but as I pulled the pontoon up on shore, I thought about the Laserlure in my bass box. It's the one I picked up at ICAST and wrote about a couple of weeks back. People laughed at me then and thought it was a joke. My co-workers onshore did the same thing when I told them I was going to try it out. The red light in the lure lit up as soon as it hit the water and was easy to see in the dark. On my sixth cast, something hammered the lure. The fight was on, and the fish peeled line from the spool on my reel. I was sure the fish was a pike and hollered at friend Martin Olson for help. The fish felt big, and I knew a net would come in handy. When Martin netted the fish, I couldn't believe what I saw. It wasn't a pike in the net but a rainbow trout -- a large rainbow trout. He measured in at about 24 inches long. I don't know exactly because the fish extended well beyond the 18-inch ruler. Martin and I guessed the fish weighed 5 pounds or more. It was the largest trout I've ever caught. ... " Click for Full Article
